The Problem With Generic Empowerment Pitches

Hey there, it's Kimberly Spencer, CEO of the Communication Queens Agency, where we are revolutionizing guest podcasting, getting our clients booked on the right podcasts that build your brand awareness and your bottom line. I posted this rather spicy post on Instagram, LinkedIn—I think all the places that post posts can be seen. It was that Crown Yourself, our sister podcast associated with my coaching company, Crown Yourself Coaching, that I've had for nine years now (holy moly, going on a decade). That podcast is now a global top 2% podcast. Communication Queens was recently ranked in the top 200 marketing podcasts in the US.

We are no longer accepting guests who just want to "empower women." Nor are we accepting guests who "just think that they would be a great guest on a podcast."

Now, if you're like, “Wait, what? But don't you believe in empowering women? And I do think I'd be a great guest on a podcast.” Yes, you probably would be an amazing guest on a podcast. But are you the right guest for me? That is what every podcast host is thinking when they get pitches.


Example of True Empowerment Through Action

Let me give you an example with Crown Yourself. That podcast caters to education, personal development, spiritual development, and coinciding with your business development. We bring everything into this beautiful, holistic picture of purpose and fulfillment, supporting our clients to get amazing results. A lot of our podcast guests are female, and they do empower women. But how are you actually activating that? Is it just by what you're saying, or is it by what you're doing?

For example, one of our guests, Ashley Connell, CEO of the Prowess Project in Austin, equips caregivers with the skill set of being your OBM—your online business manager—and pairs them with visionary CEOs. She is empowering women by equipping them with a skill set. If you just want to talk and give motivational speeches, those are for YouTube. There are about 42 million hits on that on YouTube.


Know Your Audience and Pitch With Substance

When you're thinking of a podcast, you have to know the audience of podcast listeners. If you're pitching just to empower women, do you? Check out the top podcasts like Rogan, Ferriss, Impact Theory, Women of Impact. Even Women of Impact, which is geared toward empowering women, has experts who are masters of their craft: doctors, psychologists, etc.

Are you really a master of empowering women? Do you have hundreds of thousands of followers waiting with bated breath for your inspirational posts? If not, go with a different pitch.


The Need for Tangible Results

If you're a life coach, health coach, or mentor, you need to have results to back it up. When I speak about high-performance mindset, I can point to clients becoming number one in their industry, achieving their one-year goals of $4 million in bids in three months, doubling six-figure revenue in a month. These are results. Just helping people feel more confident and happy isn’t enough.

What cuts it is that they're so happy they discover the love of their life, move to Bali, and pursue their dream. That’s what transformational top podcasts are looking for: a quality story with visible results.


Authenticity: Vulnerability That Resonates

The second thing top podcasts look for is authenticity. Show up vulnerably and authentically. Share real examples. I listened to Dean Graciosi share transparently about his divorce for the first time. That vulnerability is a gift.

Remember: podcasts are not for unhealed trauma. Stories of healed challenges show that you are actually living an empowered life.


Embodied Knowledge: Living What You Teach

The last thing we look for is embodied knowledge. It’s demonstrating that you live and practice what you preach. For example, Ashley Chamberlain came on our podcast and shared her personal money habits as a bookkeeper and fractional CFO.

If you’re in the financial industry but joke about being broke, people won’t trust you. If I weren’t guesting on podcasts and converting from them, I wouldn’t be practicing what I preach. The same goes for personal trainers or other experts—you must call out any elephant in the room and demonstrate your credibility.
