[00:00] Welcome to Communication Queens

Kimberly Spencer: Welcome to the Communication Queens podcast for the visionary leaders, speakers, service providers, and podcasters who are looking to stand out sharing their story. I'm your host, Kimberly Spencer, former screenwriter turned master communications coach. On this podcast, I'll be coaching you on how to share your own transformation story so that you increase your visibility, influence, and income on podcast interviews.

Before we dive in, let me tell you about the book that started a podcasting revolution: Make Every Podcast Want You. This book is your ultimate guide to landing dream podcast interviews, building authority authentically, and making your voice the one they remember.

Today, I am joined by Trevor Houston from the Who You Know podcast — and we are diving deep into why podcasting is more than just marketing. It’s a networking superpower.

[01:16] Podcasting as a Networking Superpower

Trevor Houston: Podcasting is like a networking superpower. I love it because I get to build relationships with people I wouldn’t normally have access to.

For example, I got to interview Grant Cardone — a multi-billionaire, real estate mogul — and from that interview, I was able to connect with his wife, Elena, and daughter, Sabrina. Suddenly, I was “in the circle.”

Trevor’s Takeaway: Each podcast interview is a stepping stone. Your guest list becomes your resume, opening doors to bigger and better opportunities.

[02:38] The Power of Association & Stepping Stones

Kimberly Spencer: I always say, you never know who you know. Every podcast conversation you have levels up your circle.

Trevor Houston: Exactly! I’ve been running my show for over six years now with 500+ episodes. Every single guest adds credibility, which makes it easier to get the next big guest.

Trevor’s Tip: When people see you’ve had heavy-hitters on your podcast, it becomes a no-brainer for them to say “yes.” That’s the power of association.

[04:27] Building Relationships Beyond the Mic

Kimberly Spencer: How do you further the relationships once the interview is over?

Trevor Houston: I love this question. When I had Amberly Lago on my show — she’s a top 1% podcaster and keynote speaker — I went above and beyond. I booked a studio with a live audience, created next-level video content for her, and even built speaker reels.

Trevor’s Networking Strategy: Push power to power. Do more than expected. Send resources, make their life easier, and don’t charge for it. When you give massive value, relationships deepen.

[08:02] Creating Win-Win Opportunities

Trevor Houston: The moral of the story is this: networking is about value. What can you do to add value to someone else’s life?

I even turned my friendship with Amberly into a collaborative coaching session that became content for both of us — a true win-win.

[11:09] How to Avoid “Leech Energy”

Kimberly Spencer: I’ve seen so many podcasters treat interviews as purely transactional.

Trevor Houston: Exactly — and that’s what you want to avoid. Be aware if your guest is a few levels ahead of you and never come off as a taker. Be upfront, be transparent, and make it mutually beneficial.

[13:55] Building Trust in Remote Interviews

Trevor Houston: Remote interviews can feel transactional — especially when there are gatekeepers.

Kimberly Spencer: I always leave 10–15 minutes at the end of my interviews to discuss ways I can add value beyond the episode. This is NOT about pitching your services — it’s about being a connector and serving authentically.

[15:21] Presence & Active Listening

Trevor Houston: Active listening is the secret to networking. If you can’t be present, you’ll miss opportunities to add value.

Trevor’s Tip: Practice presence. When you hear something you can connect to, make the connection right then and there. Even if the introduction doesn’t work out, you still added value.

[19:21] Asking the Right Questions

Kimberly Spencer: When does it cross the line from asking questions to sales probing?

Trevor Houston: It has to feel natural. Don’t force “How can I add value?” every five minutes. Build a real conversation. Sometimes, just making someone smile is enough to add value.

[24:15] The Energy You Bring Changes the Room

Trevor shares how bringing high energy into his office shifted a struggling colleague’s mood completely.

Trevor’s Insight: Positive energy is contagious — so is negative energy. Choose what you spread.

[26:44] Pay It Forward: The Ripple Effect

Trevor Houston: In my Career Transition Summit, I give job seekers a $3,000-value program for free — but I ask them to refer three more job seekers. That ripple effect creates massive impact.

Kimberly Spencer: That’s abundance on steroids. I do something similar with my “Karmic Connections,” making 1–3 introductions a day.

[31:03] Handling Haters & Trolls

Trevor Houston: Hurt people hurt people. When you get trolled, take it to the DMs, show empathy, and ask if they’re okay. Nine times out of ten, they’ll back down — and sometimes even become a raving fan.

Trevor’s Rule: Bless them and block them if necessary. Protect your peace.

[37:34] Using Podcasting as a Content Machine

Trevor reveals how podcasting lets financial advisors create compliance-approved content quickly and authentically — without scripts or teleprompters.

Trevor’s Blueprint: Record → Transcribe → Get compliance edits → Repurpose into clips, articles, and social content.

[44:59] Why Marketing Comes Before Sales

Trevor Houston: There is no sales without marketing. You’ve got to have traffic before you can convert leads.

[46:50] Creating a Course That Delivers Results

Trevor shares the behind-the-scenes of building his course for financial advisors — from compliance reviews to worksheets, campaigns, and landing pages.
