About the Podcast
Welcome to the Communication Queens podcast for the visionary leaders, speakers, service providers, and podcasters who are looking to stand out sharing their story. I'm your host, Kimberly Spencer, former screenwriter turned master communications coach. On this podcast, I'll be coaching you on how to share your own transformation story so that you increase your visibility, influence, and income on podcast interviews. Let's get into it.
Why I Took a Visibility Break
Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Communication Queens podcast. I am so excited to be back here with you. It has been five months since we have been off the mic. Technically in podcast land, that means this podcast went inactive. Gasp!
In this episode, I want to share not only how to reignite your visibility strategy after a break, but why I honestly believe visibility breaks are necessary. We are people first, not personal brands. You're a person first. So when life starts lifing, as it does, there will be times where intentional breaks to regain clarity and reignite your visibility strategy with purpose are necessary.
I’ve taken a few breaks with my other podcast, Crown Yourself, a couple of times. Yes, the numbers dropped. And yes, that's not the reason why I do it anyway. You have to look at the purpose for the break and the purpose for coming back.
What Triggered This Pause
To give you some backstory, this pause came after the intense lead-up to the launch of my book, "Make Every Podcast Want You" — hitting bestseller status, getting featured in Times Square, speaking at masterminds, back-to-back engagements… all while pregnant. I didn’t know I was borderline anemic and struggling with health.
In my past pregnancies, I was fine. This time, I was already deep into 75 Hard. But when the second trimester hit, instead of getting a burst of energy, I was exhausted walking upstairs. Turns out I was two points away from being anemic.
Business Pivot: Done-for-You to Done-with-You
At the same time, we made a massive pivot from a done-for-you agency model to consulting. Many of our clients wanted to bring strategies in-house. They needed flexibility to dial up or down based on launch cycles—not to be locked into a set number of podcast appearances.
I heard client feedback like: “We’ve gotten clients and referrals, now we’re overwhelmed trying to fulfill and still do more podcasting.” And I felt that. I was also tired.
So I stepped back. I looked at everything with a fine-tooth comb. What brings me joy? What aligns with my leadership strategy through astrology and Human Design? What’s actually working? What’s not?
The Mindset Around Pausing
Honestly, I love podcasting. But I was burnt out. So we took a break. A longer one than expected, because I didn’t foresee the health stuff either.
There’s this belief: “If I stop, I’ll lose everything.” I’ve coached hundreds of entrepreneurs through that hamster-wheel mindset. You are allowed to pause. And your podcast can still serve even if you’re not releasing new episodes. Let your existing assets work for you.
Lessons from the Pause
That pause brought with it clarity and a complete shift. We pivoted to done-with-you consulting. We saw success quickly—consults booked without doing the heavy lifting for clients.
What we do now is train teams and guide internal processes we’ve spent years perfecting. From getting booked on great podcasts to generating profitable lead gen.
Clarity Through the Data
Pausing is a privilege. Just like pressure is. When you pause, you can finally see what aligns.
You also need to know: is this a fear-based retreat or a strategic pause?
In our Queen Bee curriculum, we always teach our leaders to look at the data because feelings fluctuate. Data doesn't lie. If something's not working? Pivot. But only if the data backs that up.
You need to get clear: are you reacting from emotion, or responding from insight?
Real-World Example: Calories, Business, and Metrics
When I was training for a marathon, I didn’t realize that once I stopped running 3–5 miles a day, I needed to adjust my food intake. Business is the same. You need to match your output to your inputs.
That means tracking what actually matters:
- Not followers (vanity)
- Not revenue (also vanity)
- But things like engagement, profitability, and conversion rates
And when the data is clear, you can move forward confidently. But it requires that pause.
Vision, Values, and Brand Alignment
This pause also gave me time to clarify the vision of Communication Queens, Crown Yourself, and my personal brand. I had to look at what aligned with my top two values: health and family.
From there, I looked at every initiative and asked: Does this serve the long-term vision? If not, let it go. If it does, double down.
And when you come back, you get to come back how you want. Visibility isn’t just about being seen—it’s about being seen when it matters most.
Building Better With Clarity
So now? We’re launching training programs post-baby. I’m leaning into writing (our family is publishing "It’s Just a Fart" as a homeschool project!).
I’ve committed to writing one book a year for the next decade. Why? Because writing brings me joy. And because I now design my visibility based on my values.
The Duct Tape Metaphor
Ever feel like your business is being held together by duct tape?
That was me. And if you want to scale sustainably, you eventually need to fix the pipes.
That means taking the break. Doing the maintenance. Not just pushing until fumes are all that’s left.
Breaks = Longevity
One of my biggest shifts? Choosing routine maintenance over burnout. My family deserves better. My clients deserve better. I deserve better.
Your business, your voice, your impact—they grow when you pause long enough to recalibrate.
Final Words + Call to Action
Take the time. Reflect. Review. Reignite. And if you need support on what to look at and how to pivot, book a visibility strategy consult. Let’s get your comeback crowned.
